The View from The Shard Review: Is London’s Skyline Ticket Worth It?

I have lived in the UK long enough to know that London views are often sold with a heroic amount of marketing and a slightly less heroic amount of actual space. So I approached The View from The Shard as a reviewer, not a very excitable tourist: what do you get, how does it feel, and is it worth making room for in an already expensive London day?

The short answer is that the attraction has a genuinely persuasive core. You get 360-degree views, indoor observation levels, the Level 72 open-air Skydeck, a Champagne bar and a digital photo package. The height is the headline, but the real test is whether the visit feels complete rather than like a lift ride followed by one quick photograph.

Check today’s ticket availability

My verdict is positive, with two important caveats: weather changes the mood, and prices depend on the date and booking flow. I would check the live ticket calendar before building the rest of the day around a sunset slot.

The height gives familiar London districts a completely different scale.

What you are actually paying for

The strongest part of The View from The Shard is the amount of perspective packed into one visit. The official experience covers Levels 68 and 69, then takes you higher to Level 72, where the open-air element makes the building feel less like a sealed viewing box. I found that contrast more valuable than simply having another indoor window.

  • 360-degree panorama across the capital, with landmarks spread out below rather than presented as a single postcard.
  • Indoor and outdoor viewpoints, so you can choose comfort or atmosphere as the weather shifts.
  • London Experts who add context to the skyline and help with landmark spotting.
  • Champagne at altitude, with Moët & Chandon available from London’s highest champagne bar.
  • A digital photo package that makes the visit easier to remember after the day itself.

That list matters because a viewpoint can feel expensive when the only activity is looking through glass. Here, the experience overview describes a broader visit, which is why I would treat it as a timed attraction rather than a quick add-on between errands.

The Thames becomes an easy reference line when you are landmark spotting.

The best bits, and the bits I would plan around

The view is the obvious win, but the changing conditions are part of the calculation. On a clear day, you get a satisfying map of London: the Thames, bridges, towers and neighbourhoods all settle into place. On a hazier day, the atmosphere is more cinematic, although distant landmarks will not be as crisp. I would not call that a flaw in the attraction, but I would avoid promising children a perfect landmark checklist.

The Open-Air Skydeck is the detail that gives the visit its pulse. Being outside at that height makes the architecture more legible and the experience more memorable. It is also the area I would prioritise for photographs, before settling into the slower indoor viewing levels.

  1. Check the live date and price before choosing a time.
  2. Allow enough time for security, lifts and both the view and the supporting details.
  3. Use the open-air deck early, then return indoors if the wind is doing too much.
  4. Ask a London Expert about the landmarks you cannot place from the first glance.
  5. Keep the photo package as a memento, rather than spending the whole visit behind your phone.

My only real practical reservation is that popular slots can make the experience feel less private than the dreamy promotional photographs suggest. This is a major London attraction, after all. Book an off-peak time if you want a calmer pace, and do not assume that a cloudy forecast means the ticket has no value.

Is it good for a date, family day or first London visit?

For a date, The View from The Shard is an easy yes if you both like a strong setting and do not need constant entertainment. The champagne option adds a celebratory rhythm, while the skyline does the heavy lifting when conversation briefly runs out. I speak from experience: sometimes a dramatic view is a useful third person at the table.

For families, the broad sightlines and landmark hunt are helpful, but I would set expectations. This is not an interactive theme park and young children may run out of patience before adults do. The outdoor deck, the height and the chance to point out the Thames make it more engaging than a static museum stop, especially if you prepare a short list of things to find.

  • First-time visitors: excellent for getting a fast mental map of London.
  • Couples: strongest with a late afternoon or celebratory booking.
  • Families: worthwhile with a simple landmark challenge and realistic timing.
  • London locals: best when you want to reset your view of a familiar city.

It is also a sensible pairing with London Bridge, Borough Market and the South Bank. That location makes the attraction easier to justify because it can anchor a wider day, rather than requiring a special journey for one short activity. Check the practical booking details before travelling, particularly if access requirements or maintenance notices matter to your group.

The official shop: four small keepsakes worth a look

The attraction also has a separate official shop, and this is where the product range becomes more concrete. I like that the souvenirs are not limited to a logo on a mug. The following are the clearest options I found, with prices shown during research:

  • The Shard Oud Skyline Candle is listed at £25, a home fragrance memento that feels more grown-up than a novelty souvenir.
  • The Shard London Garden Candle is also £25, giving the range a softer, greener alternative.
  • The Julien Macdonald x TVFTS x ROS Tote Bag is listed at £18.95 and is the most practical everyday pick.
  • The Hand Painted The View from The Shard Model is listed at £14, a small display piece that makes the most literal keepsake.

These are not substitutes for the ticket and I would not pretend a candle makes an expensive attraction cheaper. They do, however, give repeat visitors and gift buyers more choice. The official shop also carries homeware, clothing, notebooks and other souvenirs, so it is worth browsing separately if you want a physical reminder without booking another visit.

The wider programme and installations can add a little more character to a repeat visit.

How I would plan the booking

I would start with the official booking page, then compare the experience details against the mood I wanted. A first visit does not need every add-on, but a celebration may justify the Champagne bar when the price difference works for your date.

Next, I would check the Skydeck information and the opening and availability notes. This takes a minute and avoids the slightly tragic situation of promising an outdoor view to someone who has dressed for a restaurant, only to discover that the weather is doing a full impression of November.

If I were buying a gift as well, I would browse the official shop after choosing the ticket, rather than treating the two as one purchase. The hand-painted model feels especially suited to someone who collects city miniatures, while a tote is the more useful choice.

Finally, I would save the Oud Skyline Candle or London Garden Candle for the people who like a quieter reminder of a trip. They are modest, clearly priced keepsakes, and that is sometimes exactly what you want after spending the day trying to photograph the whole capital.

My honest verdict

The View from The Shard is worth it when you want a polished London experience with a genuinely unusual perspective, not merely a high floor and a photograph. The open-air deck, Champagne bar, digital photo package and helpful experts make the ticket feel like a proper visit. The attraction is especially convincing for a first trip, a celebration or a local who has somehow never looked down on the capital from this angle.

The cons are equally clear: it is a premium attraction, weather affects the view, and busy slots can reduce the sense of privacy. My advice is to check the current price and availability, choose the time for the mood you want, and allow more time than the lift journey suggests. If you do that, the value is in the whole sequence rather than a single panorama.

Final verdict: a memorable, well-rounded London viewpoint that earns its price for the right occasion, with the Level 72 Skydeck making the strongest case.
