How to Plan LED Strip Lighting at Home: A Practical BLT Direct Guide

I used to think LED strip lighting was one of those jobs that started with peeling off a backing strip and ended with hoping for the best. Then I spent an afternoon trying to hide a run under a shelf, only to discover that the light was too blue, the corners looked dotted and the driver was nowhere near the socket. A small project, a surprisingly large amount of faff.

The easier way is to plan the light before buying it. BLT Direct is a useful place to do that because its range covers seamless COB strips, different colour temperatures, IP-rated options, profiles, connectors and drivers in one lighting shop. I can compare the technical details, check the current price and choose a strip for the actual room rather than guessing from a pretty photograph.

Browse BLT Direct LED strips

This is my practical five-step method. It suits a kitchen shelf, wardrobe, media unit, hallway or cosy alcove, and it leaves room for the slightly awkward questions: how bright should it be, can it get damp, and do I need a driver? In short, yes, check all three before checkout.

What should your LED strip lighting actually do?

First, I write down the job in one sentence. Is the strip there to illuminate a work surface, make a display shelf glow, add a soft layer behind the television, or help me find the stairs at night? That decision affects brightness, colour and whether I want the strip visible at all. Task lighting needs useful output; ambient lighting can be gentler.

Measure the route twice, including the corners and the point where the cable reaches the driver. BLT Direct lists several strips as sold per metre, which is handy for a fitted run, but it also means I need to order the right length rather than assume a roll is ready to go. The COB (Spotless) Warm White strip gives 760 lm/m from 10 W/m.

  • Kitchen worktop: prioritise brightness and a colour that keeps food looking natural.
  • Shelves or a bookcase: choose smooth, dot-free output and conceal the strip in a profile.
  • Bedroom or lounge: warmer light and dimming usually feel more relaxed.
  • Stairs and hallways: measure the full route and plan cable access before fixing anything.

Use the BLT Direct lighting range to compare lumens, wattage and dimensions rather than relying on the word bright. It is a tiny bit nerdy, but it stops a decorative glow being asked to light an entire kitchen.

Which colour temperature will suit your room?

Colour temperature is the number in kelvin. Lower numbers look warmer and more golden; higher numbers look cooler and crisper. For a sitting room, bedside lighting or a snug shelf, I would start around 2700K to 3000K. For a kitchen work zone, 3000K to 4000K can feel clearer without becoming office-like.

If you want a particularly cosy finish, the COB (Spotless) Ultra Warm White strip is an unusual 1800K option. It has 10 W/m output. I would use it behind a headboard, around a bar shelf or inside a room where the light is meant to feel like candlelight. It is not my pick for chopping vegetables, unless the recipe is extremely forgiving.

For a balanced everyday choice, the 3000K Warm White COB strip has a 120-degree beam angle, 480 LEDs per metre and a 50mm cutting point. Those details matter because a dot-free COB strip gives a much more even line when it is fitted close to the eye.

  1. Pick the mood first: cosy, neutral or crisp.
  2. Match the kelvin number across nearby lamps where possible.
  3. Check the colour rendering information if the strip will light food, art or clothing.

Which IP rating fits your LED strip location?

IP ratings are not decoration. They describe protection from solids and moisture, so I would never use an indoor IP20 strip where it can be splashed. For a dry bedroom, shelf or media unit, IP20 is often the neatest choice. For a bathroom, outdoor route or steamy kitchen zone, look at a suitable IP65 or IP67 product and follow the installation guidance.

The COB (Spotless) IP67 Very Warm White strip uses 10 W/m and is a sensible direction for areas exposed to humidity or occasional moisture. I would still avoid placing any electrical connection where water can collect, and I would make sure the driver and joins are appropriate for the setting.

For a fireplace, sauna or particularly hot installation, BLT Direct has a more specialist option: the 3m Dimmable Heat Resistant COB kit. It includes three metres of IP67 strip, pre-wired heat-resistant tails and a matched 24V driver. Its stated operating temperature reaches up to +100°C, so this is the kind of product I would consider when ordinary strip would be a hopeful gamble.

What profile, driver and connections does your LED strip need?

A profile is the slim channel that holds the strip and cover. It helps protect the LEDs, tidy the edge and soften the light, especially on a visible shelf. Measure the inside width before ordering. The LED profile collection includes surface, recessed, corner and waterproof options, so I can choose around the furniture rather than force the furniture to suit one channel.

The compatible profile options are worth checking alongside the strip. A neat silver mounting kit can make a long run look deliberate, while a corner profile can send light across a wall instead of directly into my eyes. The LED strip accessories section is also where I would look for connectors and pre-wired tails.

Most 24V strips need a suitable driver. Work out the total wattage, then choose a driver with sensible headroom and check the maximum recommended run. The warm 10 W/m product recommends a 5m maximum run powered from one end, with longer lengths run in parallel. That is precisely the sort of instruction I would screenshot before starting.

  • Strip voltage: the strip and driver must match, such as 24V.
  • Total load: multiply watts per metre by the length you will install.
  • Dimming: choose a dimmable strip and compatible driver if you want evening control.
  • Connections: allow space for tails, joins and access to the driver.

How can you test the LED strip before fixing it?

Before removing any backing, I lay everything out on the floor: strip, profile, driver, cable route and connector. I check the polarity, test the full run and confirm the light colour is right. This is the unglamorous stage that saves the most swearing. If the strip is made to order, I also read the return information carefully and double-check the measurements.

For a shallow channel, the 4mm COB LED strip is an option to compare. Its slim format can help where a normal strip would not fit, but a narrow product still needs adequate room for the profile and cable. I would mark the centre line, clean the surface, dry-fit the channel and only then press the strip into place.

When the route is longer or the location is demanding, I would rather use a complete heat-resistant kit with a matched driver than assemble unknown parts. BLT Direct also offers a bespoke LED strip design-and-build service, which is worth considering for a complicated commercial or architectural run.

What should you check before ordering an LED strip?

I like a final checklist because enthusiasm is not a wiring plan. Before I press the order button, I check:

  1. The measured route, including tails and corners.
  2. The purpose of the light and a comfortable colour temperature.
  3. The IP rating for the actual location, not the location I wish I had.
  4. The voltage, wattage, driver size and maximum run length.
  5. The profile width, cover style and any required connectors.
  6. The live price, VAT, stock status and delivery information.

BLT Direct makes that comparison easier because the lighting categories bring the practical components together. It also says mainland UK delivery is free over a minimum order value, which may be useful when a project needs a strip, profile and driver rather than one lonely metre.

Ready to plan your LED strip installation?

The best LED strip installation is rarely the one with the biggest number of features. It is the one that fits the route, gives the right mood, survives the environment and can be serviced without dismantling half the room. For most dry indoor projects, I would start with the 3000K seamless COB strip. For moisture, I would compare the IP67 version. For heat, humidity or a fireplace, the complete heat-resistant kit is the more considered route.

That is why BLT Direct feels like a natural choice for this job. Its range is broad enough for a tiny shelf project and technical enough for a more involved installation, while the product pages show the numbers I actually need to make a decision. I would measure first, shortlist two options, then check the live product details one last time before ordering.
