It was in West Yorkshire that Donald Ward set up TOG24 in 1958. “Big D” had worked his way up from the ranks of an apprentice millwright fixing looms in the prosperous textile industry around Dewsbury until the late 1950s, when he decided to go it alone.
This Heckmondwike-based firm has come a long way since its shoemaking days; in the 1970s, it branched out into sports bags and football kits, and now, it is famous for its waterproofs and fleeces. As demand grew, the line expanded to include skiwear and casual wear. They began exporting production with a heavy heart, but it was necessary for their survival and competitiveness. The headquarters where they manufactured all of their garments is still under their ownership. Everything they sell has to be in line with their motto.
“Truth Over Glory Everyday” is how TOG24 is brief. The “True” nature that welcomes participation from everyone—like going for a family ski or walking with friends to a pub—is their emphasis, rather than the “Glory” nature—like putting flags atop mountains or gliding down sheer ice walls.
They make TOG24 in this spot in Yorkshire, in the Spen Valley. Despite their best efforts, they remain sceptical of marketing hype and want you to know that the product is truly worth the price. Even though they stopped making their products in 2010, the Spen Valley is still rightfully proud to be the place where all of their items are made.
At the Heckmondwike factory shop, the TOG24 voyage began. After their first store which was originally carpeted in offcuts of fleece and sold seconds and ends of lines out of cardboard boxes—became successful, they stopped trying to sell TOG24 to other people’s businesses and started their own chain of outlets. Even though TOG24‘s original Heckmondwike factory is still operational, they now have over 60 sites spread out across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
