In 1958, Donald Ward established TOG24 in West Yorkshire. “Big D” had been an apprentice millwright in the thriving textile sector surrounding Dewsbury, fixing looms; by the late 1950s, he had learned enough to strike out on his own.
The Heckmondwike-based company, which started out making shoes, diversified into sports bags and football kits in the 1970s, and is now known for its waterproofs and fleeces. The addition of skiwear and casual apparel came as the brand’s popularity increased. It was with a sad heart that they started production overseas, but they had to in order to remain competitive and keep their doors open. They still own the head office where they made all of their clothes. Regardless of the product, it has to align with their motto.
“Truth Over Glory Everyday” is the acronym for TOG24. The TOG24 journey started at the Heckmondwike factory shop. They stopped attempting to sell TOG24 to other people’s businesses and built up their own chain of stores after the store, which was originally carpeted in off cuts of fleece and sold seconds and ends of lines out of cardboard boxes, did so well. Although their original manufacturing shop in Heckmondwike is still open for business, TOG24 has expanded to more than 60 locations throughout the UK and Ireland.
