Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5: everything I’ve pieced together, and where I’m actually preordering it

I have never seen a game hijack a group chat quite like this one. The moment the PS5 listing for Grand Theft Auto VI went live, three separate friends sent me the same link within an hour, each with a variation of “are you seeing this”. So I did the sensible, adult thing and spent a full evening reading every scrap of official material, zooming into screenshots like a detective, and working out exactly how I want to buy it. This is that deep dive – one game, start to finish, and where I’ve decided to put my preorder down.

GTA VI on PS5 – the 30-second version

Setting: a modern, sun-soaked reimagining of Vice City in the state of Leonida.

Leads: two – Lucia and Jason – the series’ first playable female lead, framed as a Bonnie-and-Clyde pairing.

Platform: PS5 boxed edition, built to push the hardware.

Where I’m buying: preordering at The Game Collection for the price guarantee. Listing here.

Vice City is back, and it looks unreal

Let’s start with the place, because the place is the star. GTA VI returns to Vice City, Rockstar’s neon-drenched take on Miami, now sitting inside the wider state of Leonida. The first thing that hit me in the footage wasn’t a car or a gunfight. It was the light. Wet tarmac reflecting pink signage, heat haze over the water, beaches that look like a holiday brochure with a criminal underbelly. This is a world designed to be stared at.

The Leonida coastline in daylight – the sense of scale is the headline, not the crime.

What surprised me most is how alive it looks between the big set pieces. Crowds that behave like crowds, a swamp-and-city geography that suggests a genuinely varied map, weather that rolls in rather than flicks on. If you’ve been burned by trailers that flatter to deceive, I understand the caution – I share it. But there’s enough here across multiple official shots to make me think the ambition is real. You can size it up yourself on the PS5 product page.

Two leads, and the series’ first playable woman

Here’s the part that genuinely moves the series forward. GTA VI is built around two protagonists – Lucia and Jason – and Lucia is the first playable female lead in the mainline history of the franchise. Rockstar is framing them as a modern Bonnie and Clyde, two people bound together by circumstance and bad decisions, and the marketing leans into that push-and-pull relationship rather than a lone-wolf power fantasy.

Night-time Vice City – the neon palette that’s become the game’s signature look.

Why does that matter beyond a headline? Because a two-hander changes the storytelling. It opens the door to perspective switching, to missions that split and rejoin, to a relationship that can fracture. GTA V’s three-lead structure was one of its smartest ideas, and paring it back to a duo with a real emotional core could be sharper still. I’m cautiously excited, and I’ve learned to trust Rockstar with character work. Read how the edition is described on the official listing.

The first playable woman in the mainline series, in a Bonnie-and-Clyde story – that’s the detail I keep coming back to.

What the screenshots actually tell us

I went through the official PS5 gallery frame by frame, because that’s the kind of person a launch like this turns me into. Swipe through a few below and you’ll notice the same things I did – the density of detail, the range of environments, and how deliberately each shot is composed.

The takeaway from all that squinting? Consistency. The lighting model holds up across day, night and dusk, the character detail is there in close and mid shots, and nothing looks like a bullshot that couldn’t survive being played. That’s the reassurance I wanted before committing. If you’re doing your own homework, the full set lives on the PS5 gallery here.

Why the PS5 boxed edition specifically

You’ve got a choice to make, and it’s worth two minutes of thought. The PS5 boxed edition is the one I’m going for, and not just out of nostalgia for a shelf that actually has games on it. A physical disc means a resale value later, a lend-to-a-mate option, and a copy that doesn’t vanish if a storefront ever does. For a game you’ll pour a hundred hours into, that permanence feels right.

A game this big is one you keep – which is half the argument for buying it on disc.

There’s a practical angle too. Physical launch stock is finite, and the PS5 edition of the biggest game of the generation is exactly the sort of thing that sells through on day one. Reserving the disc now is how you guarantee a copy sits waiting for you rather than a “notify me when back in stock” email. Here’s the PS5 boxed edition I’m reserving.

Preorder nowGuarantees launch stock instead of a back-order queue
Lowest-price guaranteePay the cheapest price between order and dispatch
Free UK deliveryThe low price isn’t undone at the checkout

Reserve the PS5 disc edition

The preorder promise that made my mind up

Here’s what tipped me from “I’ll get it eventually” to “reserved”. The Game Collection’s preorder deal charges you the lowest price the game hits between the day you order and the day it ships. So if the price dips before launch, you get the dip automatically. There’s no gamble in ordering early – you can’t lose money by being organised, which is a rare thing in this hobby.

Between order and dispatch, banked automatically
Day-one stock
Your copy is set aside, not back-ordered
Free delivery
Tracked UK shipping on qualifying orders

That combination is the whole argument. I don’t have to guess the perfect moment to buy, I don’t have to fight for stock on release day, and I don’t pay a delivery surcharge that eats the saving. Reserve, forget, receive. If GTA VI is on your list at all, do it the easy way and lock your preorder in here.

My honest verdict before a single mission

What has me sold

A stunning Vice City, a two-lead story with real emotional stakes, the series’ first playable woman, and screenshots that hold up under scrutiny.

The one honest caveat

It’s still pre-launch. Trailers aren’t playthroughs, and hype this big can outrun reality. I’m optimistic, not certain – and that’s a fair place to be.

So where do I land? Grand Theft Auto VI is the release I’m most confident about this generation, and everything Rockstar has shown points at a genuine leap rather than a lap of honour. The single caution I’ll keep flying is the obvious one: no one has finished it yet, so temper the hype with a little patience. But the smart move – reserving the PS5 disc with a price guarantee and free delivery – carries no downside whatsoever. Do the organised thing and preorder GTA VI on PS5 before launch stock tightens.
