Staysure Signature travel insurance review: the policy I would choose for a big holiday

There is a particular moment before a big holiday when the excitement gets interrupted by a slightly grim thought: what happens if something goes wrong? I have spent enough time comparing airport transfers and hotel cancellation rules to know that travel insurance is not the glamorous bit, but it can be the bit that protects the whole booking. For this article, I focused on one specific Staysure offering: Staysure Signature travel insurance.

What Staysure Signature actually includesThe medical screening is part of the productHow Signature compares with the other named policiesWhere the optional extras make senseA genuinely useful service after you leave homeThe buying experience and my final verdict

Signature is Staysure’s top listed cover level for ordinary travel insurance. It is quote-based rather than a fixed-price product, so your premium depends on the trip, age, destination, travellers and medical screening. The current site advertises 20% off with code NOW20 on new policies until 8 September 2026, subject to exclusions and terms. That is useful at checkout, but the cover detail is the real reason to look closely. I would start with the current Staysure quote page and keep the policy comparison open.

What Staysure Signature actually includes

Staysure is a UK travel insurance specialist, particularly known for helping people of all ages and people with pre-existing medical conditions find cover. The brand says it can cover over 1,300 medical conditions, subject to screening, and that 97% of customers are able to get medical cover. Those figures are not a guarantee for an individual quote, but they explain why the brand is relevant to more than a standard young-traveller policy. The travel insurance overview gives the wider context.

The headline Signature benefits are easy to understand. You get unlimited medical and repatriation expenses, no excess, up to £15,000 cancellation per person and up to £5,000 baggage cover. The policy also includes £2 million personal liability, £25,000 legal costs and £2,000 gadget cover. Some benefits are subject to policy terms, eligibility and declared conditions, so I would still read the wording before relying on a figure.

  • No excess: a claim does not start with the standard policy excess shown on lower levels.
  • Unlimited medical and repatriation: available on Signature, subject to the policy terms and screening.
  • Up to £15,000 cancellation: useful for an expensive holiday, especially when several bookings are non-refundable.
  • £5,000 baggage cover: a higher limit than the Basic and Comprehensive examples on Staysure’s comparison page.
  • £2,000 gadgets: included on Signature rather than needing to be added separately.

This is where Signature travel insurance makes a compelling case. It bundles the useful extras instead of making you build a policy from scratch. I am particularly drawn to the zero excess for a family or couple, because a small claim can otherwise become an awkward calculation about whether it is worth making at all. You can check the live cover options before deciding.

The medical screening is part of the product

For anyone with a health condition, the quote journey is not just an annoying form to rush through. It is part of what decides whether the cover is suitable. Staysure asks about medical history so accepted conditions can be listed on the policy. That includes conditions which feel routine or well managed. If you take daily medication, have recently had treatment or have a diagnosis that you normally forget about, it is worth declaring it rather than guessing.

A relaxed holiday can still benefit from cover arranged around the travellers, destination and medical details.

The brand’s dedicated medical travel insurance information explains that screening is subject to acceptance. I like that the process is presented as a normal part of getting a quote rather than a reason to avoid insurance altogether. Still, a positive-sounding statistic such as 97% should not be read as automatic acceptance. Your own answers and the final documents win every time. It is sensible to review the medical cover details before paying.

  1. Enter the destination, dates and traveller details.
  2. Answer the medical screening questions carefully and completely.
  3. Compare the cover level, excess and optional extras shown for your trip.
  4. Check the accepted conditions, exclusions and policy wording before payment.
  5. Save the confirmation and emergency assistance details somewhere offline.

That last step is boring but sensible. I would save a PDF, keep the assistance number in my phone and tell the person travelling with me where the documents are. Staysure’s online quote route is convenient, while calling the team may make more sense if your medical history is complicated or your itinerary is unusual. The phone and online options are both worth keeping in mind.

How Signature compares with the other named policies

Staysure also lists Basic and Comprehensive cover, but I would not treat them as interchangeable versions of the same thing. Signature is the offer for travellers who want the broadest standard bundle. Comprehensive travel insurance has unlimited medical and repatriation expenses, but the example comparison shows a £99 excess, up to £9,000 cancellation and £2,500 baggage cover. Basic is the budget end, with a £129 excess, up to £4,000 cancellation and £300 baggage cover.

The right policy is the one that leaves room to enjoy the trip without second-guessing every limit.
  • Choose Signature when no excess, higher cancellation and included gadget cover are priorities.
  • Choose Comprehensive when you want unlimited medical cover but can accept a lower baggage and cancellation limit.
  • Choose Basic only when the lower limits genuinely match the value and shape of your trip.
  • Compare the final quote rather than assuming the most expensive level is always best value.

My own shortlist would start with Signature for a costly long-haul holiday, a cruise or a trip involving several pre-paid bookings. For a simple European city break, Comprehensive could be perfectly sensible if its final premium better fits the budget. The single-trip option is worth checking for one-off plans, while an annual policy may suit frequent travellers. This is a product decision, not a loyalty test.

Where the optional extras make sense

Signature includes a generous core, but the trip itself can change what you need. A cruise, ski trip, golf holiday or itinerary with a lot of connections deserves a second look. Staysure offers optional extras including Cruise Plus, winter sports, golf cover, travel disruption and an excess waiver on relevant policies. The cost is quote-based, so the checkout is where you find out whether the extra protection feels proportionate.

Cruise Plus is designed for the details that make ship-based holidays different from ordinary trips.

The most distinctive add-on I found is Cruise Plus. It is designed around cruise-specific risks such as cabin confinement, itinerary changes and missed port departures. Staysure says the quote should include every country visited by the ship, even if you do not plan to disembark. That is a small but important buying detail, particularly for routes through several regions.

  • Cruise Plus: consider it for cabin confinement, missed port calls and itinerary-specific cover.
  • Winter sports: relevant for skiing and snowboarding rather than an assumption included in every policy.
  • Travel disruption: worth checking when flights and connections are central to the holiday.
  • Gadget cover: Signature already includes £2,000, so avoid paying twice for the same protection.

I would not add every option automatically. The sensible approach is to match each extra to a real part of the booking. If you are taking a cruise, review Cruise Plus here before buying the base policy. You can also compare cruise cover with the standard quote. If you are carrying expensive cameras or a laptop, compare the built-in gadget limit with any separate gadget insurance you already have.

A genuinely useful service after you leave home

One feature that makes Staysure feel more like an ongoing travel service than a document you forget about is Travel Doctor. It gives eligible travellers access to English-speaking medical help abroad, with video or in-person appointments depending on destination and availability. The service can help you find a doctor or specialist, and Staysure says there are no charges or excess to pay for the service itself, subject to its terms.

Travel Doctor is intended to give policyholders a familiar medical contact while abroad.

I can see the appeal immediately. Being unwell in another country is stressful even when it is not an emergency, and finding a clinic can take half a day of precious holiday time. Travel Doctor is not a substitute for emergency services, and it is not available for UK trips, but it could be a reassuring middle step for a minor illness or a prescription question. I would read the Travel Doctor terms before travelling.

There is also the practical support behind the policy. Staysure advertises 24/7 emergency assistance, online account management and a claims process. The claims information is useful to save before departure. The homepage states that its Comprehensive and Signature policies can include unlimited medical cover and emergency expenses, while cancellation on Signature reaches £15,000. Those details make the cover feel particularly relevant to longer, more expensive or medically complex trips.

The buying experience and my final verdict

The purchase is straightforward in principle: enter your journey, complete medical screening, compare the three levels, add any trip-specific cover and review the documents. The site is clear about the current NOW20 discount, but remember that it excludes medical screening costs and add-ons and has an end date. A quote is the only reliable way to judge price because Staysure does not publish one universal premium for Signature.

A specialist policy should support the actual activities and destinations in your holiday plan.

My verdict is that Staysure Signature is the strongest specific offer for travellers who value generous limits and a simpler bundle. The no-excess structure, £15,000 cancellation, £5,000 baggage and included gadget cover are meaningful rather than decorative. The policy is especially worth a quote if you have a valuable booking, a cruise itinerary or accepted pre-existing conditions.

I would still compare the final premium with Comprehensive, read the exclusions, and check that every condition and destination is listed correctly. Insurance cannot remove every holiday risk, but a careful quote can make the bigger ones less frightening. For me, that is the best reason to start with Staysure Signature travel insurance rather than treating it as just another tick box.

My short verdict: get a Signature quote first, then downgrade only if the lower limits genuinely fit your holiday.
